Unfortunately, the dye isn't great for the environment.
Traditional indigo production involves harmful chemicals like aniline, cyanide, benzene, formaldehyde, and sodamide, plus a heavy reliance on petrochemicals. On the flip side, even extracting indigo from the Indigofera plant isn’t without its problems. This method can lead to deforestation, high water usage, soil degradation, and loss of biodiversity.
Additionally, plant-based extraction competes with food crops for space, making it less scalable. The process itself is resource-intensive due to the low concentration of indigo in the plants, often resulting in a lower quality product because of impurities.

Our technology uses re-engineered microbial enzymes to create vibrant indigo dye from renewable resources. By embedding these engineered enzyme genes into bacteria, we transform them into bio-factories that convert sugars into stunning blue dye pigments. Our microbial bio-factories multiply quickly, churning out high yields of the blue pigment—think of it like brewing beer, but for colors!
